Diabetes is gaining the status of an epidemic in India wherein 25% of
the population is suffering from the disorder. There are several
hypoglycemic drugs in the market that have their own side effects and
patients develop resistance towards these drugs over a period of time.
The recent years has seen a renewed interest in traditional herbal
medicines for the treatment of diabetes. However, the biochemical
mechanisms involved in the action of a majority of them are unknown.
This study investigates the ability of these herbal medicines to act as
alpha-amylase inhibitors, and also their capacity to enhance pancreatic
cell regeneration and insulin producing capacity. Project Duration: 2005-2008
