Established in 1986, the Medical Biotechnology Center is located in the UMBI Medical Research Facility. The center includes faculty research laboratories, wet laboratories for biomedical companies and an animal core facility. It also houses the National Center for Fluorescence Spectroscopy of the University of Maryland School of Medicine UMBIs vision is to be a premier researchinstitution for basic and translationalresearch in biotechnology that resolvesforefront scientific problems important tosociety. UMBIs mission is to conduct groundbreaking research in key areas of biotechnology, to make fundamental discoveries, generate innovative solutions to practical problems, and develop new technologies for commercial application. UMBI is committed to providing an exceptional environment for specialized training and to mentoring tomorrows biotechnology workforce while promoting economic growth.

Mission:The Institutes mission is to develop and deploy novel fluorescence techniques and tools to advance biosensing, bio imaging and to protect and safeguard human health. With an array of internationally known scientists as members, the Institute of Fluorescence boasts hundreds of man years of fluorescence experience. In addition, the Institute is home to all the major peer-reviewed fluorescence literature in the world.

Mission: Mission: The Program in Nanobiology is dedicated to developing molecular tools that work at the subcellular level, allowing researchers to investigate processes both temporally and spacially within living cells and yielding therapeutic strategies that work at the subcellular level.
